Heading home today but as we left Briancon decided to pop up to the Henri Desgrange monument on Col de Galibier. Henri Desgrange (1865-1940) was the founder of the Tour de France and this year Le Tour celebrated 100 years since he introduced the yellow jersey to identify the race leader. First to wear it was Frenchman Eugène Christophe.

I don’t particularly like box ticking exercises but I’ve wanted to cycle Col Agnel from the Italian side for years. Finally ticked that box.

In my mind I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity to cycle Col Agnel but once again Kay came up trumps and worked it into our drive back home from Seillans.

Although I’d never cycled Col Agnel – Europe’s highest international pass road – I have ridden up it on a motorbike a couple of times. Both times up the French side. Once in 2008 when the Italian side was closed for resurfacing. And again in 2013 when both sides were open.

Today I cycled up the Italian side from Casteldelfino and then down to Chateau Ville Vieille on the French side.

Goodbye Seillans and Le Mas de Colline, it’s been fun. With any luck tomorrow it’ll be hello Casteldelfino and Col Agnel.
